About Me
My name is Kenneth aka Kenny D. I've been obsessed with dance music for 7+ years and started my DJ career in 2021. From House classics to uptempo DnB/Techno and everything in between, the purpose of my sets is to take my audience on a musical journey and to just have fun with music. The passion I have for dance music drives me to keep searching for that next catchy tune that will ignite the dance floor.
Growing up in rural Tennessee, my parents were my first exposure to music. Chicago to Richard Marx, Genesis to Garth Brooks, the big hair bands of the 80s, even world-renowned Greek-composer Yanni played throughout the house. I loved being able to pick the music on trips and even at a young age, I reveled in the opportunity to choose the emotional journey I wanted. In 2000, my parents bought me my first album, Eiffel 65's album "Europop", but mainly for the song "Blue (Da Ba Dee)". Since this was the only CD I owned, I listened to it so much that I memorized not only the words, but the electronic sounds in every song. This would be the beginning of my journey with electronic dance music.
When I was young, I was naturally competitive in anything I did, especially when it meant racing my sister to touch the car first after shopping. This led me to sports, and I began my path towards working a career in either playing or coaching. During this time, I was influenced by the teams I was surrounded by and I started to discover new genres of music. As I got older and my musical tastes started to refine, that's when I found Rap / Hip-Hop. Lil Wayne, Eminem, Drake, Ne-Yo and more filled my MP3 player. As I listened more and more, I started to understand that while the lyrics were the main focus of each track, my mind kept getting stuck on the production. The basslines, the little melodies that were added for effect, how they could take all these different pieces and make them sound cohesive, like an orchestra. That's when I started falling in love with instrumentals of Rap / Hip-Hop tracks because I wanted to just listen to how the track was produced. By the time I got to college, most of the songs I was listening to were tracks without vocals.
In college is where I was officially introduced to "EDM". A friend showed me videos of a music festival in Las Vegas called Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC). I couldn't believe what I was seeing was real. I specifically remember one Swedish House Mafia video that made my jaw drop and I knew I had to explore this type of music more. I started scouring the internet and listening every waking hour. I started building playlists I could game to, I could workout to, I could share with my friends. I became obsessed with dance music.
Fast forward a few years, a friend invites me to my first music festival, Tomorrowworld in Atlanta, GA. At this point, I'd never even been to a show; this was going to be my first experience with dance music live. That weekend transformed me. Regardless of issues with rain, cancellations, half of the festival being inaccessible on the last day, it didn't matter. I ran from stage to stage, trying to soak up as much of this music as possible. Hearing the crowd build in anticipation as the DJ worked through their transitions was exhilarating and I was so intrigued by what the DJ was doing.
After college, I really didn't have a direction for what I wanted to do professionally. I had gotten a degree in Sport Management but ultimately decided I didn't want to continue in sports due to burn-out. I worked at a fitness gym for a while, spending every penny I had on traveling to festivals or shows. When COVID started, I was working as a manager in a retail store. I wasn't happy doing what I was doing, and it started to affect me mentally and physically. The passion for music remained and it became evident that I needed a career change.
In 2021, my amazingly supportive wife bought me my first DJ controller. I had no clue what I was doing when I first started. I didn't know what a beat grid was, what phrasing meant, or how any of the buttons worked other than "Play". But I still had a blast each time I plugged it in to learn. I started looking up track lists from the artists I liked, which songs they picked and why. I was watching instructional videos to learn what DJs actually do behind the decks. After about a year, my wife convinced me to quit the retail job and start DJing full time.
And now here we are, 2 years later and I’m telling my journey in hopes that it can inspire others to not wait for things to happen for you. Find your passion and cultivate it.
This is just the beginning...
Some of my other passions outside music and sports include: spending time with my wife and dog, Luna; gaming with friends; traveling to new cities to explore their music scene; exploring the Rocky Mountains.
I have recently moved to Denver, CO and I'm very excited about the opportunities this great city has to offer. Music is thriving here and I'm so ready to showcase my skills to the world!
Feel free to reach out to me via my socials if you want to connect. I love meeting others who are as passionate about this music as I am!
